Kings County, New York Inmate Search

On This Page

An inmate search is a process of locating persons incarcerated in a correctional facility and obtaining relevant identifying, booking, and case details. Kings County has a correctional institution managed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, but no active county-run jail facilities.

Instead, the centralised New York City government, through the DOC, is responsible for detentions at the local level. At the same time, the state's Department of Corrections and Community Supervision maintains the state prisons. As of September 2025, these city and state agencies do not have an active facility within Kings County.

Nevertheless, these city, state, and federal agencies provide online tools that persons may use to find inmates in their facilities.

Note: There is an ongoing project (as of September 2025) for a borough-based jail system, with a construction site in Brooklyn, Kings County.

How to Find an Inmate in Kings County Jail

As there are no county-run jails in Kings County, persons should determine the custody status to find inmates. Generally, the NYC government, through the Department of Correction, is responsible for local detentions. Therefore, persons arrested by the Kings County Sheriff's Office or local police are most likely booked into Rikers Island facilities, which the DOC manages.

To find inmates in these facilities, individuals may use the Person in Custody Lookup tool provided by the DOC or contact:

New York City Department of Correction

75-20 Astoria Boulevard,

East Elmhurst, NY 11370

Phone: (718) 546-1500 (Office of Constituent & Grievance Services)

Email:ConstituentServices@doc.nyc.gov.

To find inmates in state or federal prisons, contact or use the tools provided by the New York Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) or the Bureau of Prisons(BOP), respectively.

How to Use the Kings County Jail Roster

There are two ways to perform inmate searches with the DOC Person in Custody Lookup tool:

  • By name: Using the inmate's first name, last name, or both
  • By number: Using the "book and case number" assigned by the facility or using an inmate's NY State Identification (NYSID) number assigned by the DCJS

Users should provide known details and select search to be led to the result section, which may contain a list of similar name matches.

What Information is Included in the Kings County Inmate Roster

The result page after conducting inmate searches with the PIC Lookup tool may provide a list of similar names or a specific inmate entry, depending on the search criteria. Clicking on the highlighted inmate name will lead users to the inmate's summary, which may contain the following information:

  • Booking name and NYSID
  • Year of birth and sex
  • Race and nativity
  • Height, weight, hair color, and eye color
  • Arrest date and number
  • Book and case number
  • Release date and discharge reason (if available).

Information on youthful offenders or other records exempted from disclosure under the state's Freedom of Information Law shall be unavailable on the site.

Jail Facility Overview in Kings County

The centralised New York City government is responsible for jails or detention facilities in Kings County, and it does this through the NYC Department of Correction (DOC). The DOC maintains several detention centers called the Rikers Island facilities, where persons arrested within Kings County may be housed.

This city jail system has an estimated capacity of 11,300 beds, but does not specify capacity for each facility, except the Rose M. Singer Center (RMSC). The RMSC is an 800-bed facility for presentenced and sentenced women. However, operations are gradually closing in favor of a new borough-based jail system. The proposed Brooklyn Detention Site in Kings County will accommodate up to 886 inmates.

How to Send Money to an Inmate in Rikers Island Facilities ?

Family and friends may deposit money into an inmate's account by visiting the DOC Cashier's Office. There are different money transfer agents that set up kiosks at this office to help individuals deposit money into the account for a fee. Information required for the cash or card payments includes the inmate's last name, first name, and book and case number.

Alternatively, these money transfer agents may provide ways to send payments via phone, internet, or other walk-in locations.

Inmate Search by Jail Facility

To find persons incarcerated in city, state, or federal jail facilities, persons should use the online search provided by the respective agency. For inmates in any NYC DOC facility, use the Person in Custody lookup tool. On the other hand, perform an "incarcerated lookup" on the DOCCS site to find persons in state prisons. Lastly, find federal inmates using the BOP inmate locator.

Searchers may need to provide identifying information, like names or assigned jail numbers, to find inmate information.

Kings County Visitation Rules and Schedules

The DOC allows persons in custody to receive in-person and video visits from family and friends. Sentenced inmates may receive visits twice a week, while pre-sentenced detainees may receive up to three visits weekly. All visits can be up to an hour.

In-person visits are on Sundays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Interested persons should take along valid photo IDs to the facility during the following registration hours for processing and scheduling according to the DOC schedule:

Wednesday and Thursday: 1:00 PM - 6:00 PM

Saturday and Sunday: 7:00 AM - 12:00 PM

(Free transportation available from Brooklyn and back.)

On the other hand, all video visits (Televisit) are on Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Interested persons are to fill out and submit an online request form before scheduling visits. Upon confirmation, all visitors should conduct visits in line with the DOC dress code and visiting rules.

Mailing and Commissary Information

Interested persons may send letters or packages to DOC inmates by applying postage and addressing them to:

Inmate's full name, book, and case number

Full name and address of the inmate's housing facility.

For example:

Jane Doe, 0123456789

Rose M. Singer Center

19-19 Hazen Street

East Elmhurst, NY 11370.

The DOC shall inspect all incoming packages or mail, and only permissible items shall be delivered to the inmate. Therefore, ensure that all items are included in the DOC's list and avoid mailing banned or prohibited materials. Persons who want to send cash should instead send a cashier's check or money order, or fund the inmate's account through the provided channels. Furthermore, inmates may purchase food items, toiletries, and other products from the commissary (jail store).
